In the week when Andy Murray became a chat show personality on stage and the face of shortbread it’s fantastic to see the Great Scot can still pull in the crowds, with sold out venues for his Evening with Andy Murray tour in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. I was gutted when I realised we had missed the opportunity to see him and of course we will miss him when we make the long pilgrimage to Wimbledon...

Don’t know if you’ve been watching the new detective thriller Department Q on Netflix which is set in Scotland and features the world’s most unpopular copper Carl Morck. He is English, and a Detective Inspector in the capital’s police. It’s a pretty gripping and based on a Danish series. A couple of years ago I came across the beast in the picture above sticking out of our drive. What could it be, I thought? So I kicked it experimentally and it just swayed lightly. I called the missus and we dug down a bit to see what it might be and we came to the terrifying conclusion it was bamboo! Now I don’t suppose most people know a lot about this plant, but it’s a terror. I had mostly...

Are we back to the days of the border reivers? Have some desperadoes from Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, or one of the Ayrshires been involved in a kidnap plot? It may just be so. Because an innocent and unassuming North Ayrshire wheelie bin has been spotted in darkest east Germany, alone amongst the thousands of Teutonic wheelie bins.
The lonely bin was spotted in the village of Viernau...

Well you could have knocked me down with a feather, those nice people at the BBC saying that Scots are profligate. But when I investigated it was that the nation is a spendthrift with water not pound notes. You’ve probably noticed that this year has been very dry so far, but of course as I write this today, it’s tipping down with rain and there is a hint of dreich about the week.
Did you know that...

Did you know that a Scot was the inspiration for Mrs Tiggywinkle, the fictional hedgehog made famous by Beatrix Potter? The author had her own hedgehog and this animal was blended with the characteristics and character of her Scottish washer woman Kitty MacDonald who was in her 80s when Potter knew her. The hedgehog is a washerwoman like Kitty and a child Lucie comes to find her lost hankies...

There is an old joke from the time when chimpanzees advertised tea and there is a scene where chimps are shifting a piano and one young chimp’s foot is stuck under the instrument. And he shouts: “Do you know the piano’s on my foot?” And the old hand in charge misunderstanding says: “You hum it son and I’ll play the tune.”
Which them makes me think about Cuba in 2016 where a hum heard at the American...

Do you have a bucket list of things to do, I certainly do? And one of those things is Whale-watching . I have contemplated going to the North American continent and it would be the only reason to get me on a boat near the Antarctic , even though I applied to be a part of the British Antarctic Expedition when I was 16. Of course they turned me down as having no skills. I did well to avoid it really...
