Father's Day Rumbling Towards Us
There is an old joke from the time when chimpanzees advertised tea and there is a scene where chimps are shifting a piano and one young chimp’s foot is stuck under the instrument. And he shouts: “Do you know the piano’s on my foot?” And the old hand in charge misunderstanding says: “You hum it son and I’ll play the tune.”
Which them makes me think about Cuba in 2016 where a hum heard at the American Embassy in Havana was thought to be adversely affecting the staff in the building it was thought to be a weapon devised by fiendish adversaries of the USA. The sufferers reported problems with their balance, dizziness (is that the same thing), insomnia and headaches. It was pretty nasty stuff and the effects seemed to last for months. It even got a name Havana Syndrome.
And now Islanders in the Outer Hebrides are feeling similar stuff after a so called mysterious low frequency hum has appeared and is at it night and day. There is no suggestion that there is an attempt to psychologically disrupt local life as there was in Havana, but the effects are sadly similar. There is something like 200 people who are affected which is driving them up the pole. There is even a FaceBook page dedicated to the hum and the poor folks affected. The sufferers report headaches and insomnia. The low frequency 50hz hum is widely heard, strongest near the east coast, but nobody can find the source and investigations are ongoing, even using radio technology, but for the moment there is no escaping the hum on the island.
And it’s the same for Father’s Day there is no escaping the date as it rumbles slowly towards us on the 15th June.
