Thrifty Scots are Profligate Says Beeb

Well you could have knocked me down with a feather, those nice people at the BBC saying that Scots are profligate. But when I investigated it was that the nation is a spendthrift with water  not pound notes. You’ve probably noticed that this year has been very dry so far, but of course as I write this today, it’s tipping down with rain and there is a hint of dreich about the week.

Did you know that the average person in Scotland uses more than 40% more water than a the average person in Yorkshire. I think that’s a bit of stereotyping myself as they pit two thrifty kinds against each other, but using nearly half as much again is shocking. Are the Scots so much cleaner?  Ah it turns out it’s not so. It is the way that we use the abundance that nature has so far given to the nation.  You may look out of the window and see rain. But we are very inefficient at capturing it and only about 1% of rainfall  is collected in lochs and reservoirs, never mind used.

OFWAT the ever popular quango that monitors the water industry and its waste has now chided Scots for using an average of  178 litres of water a day. The folks of England and Wales wade through 140. Litres a day  and the money conscious Yorkies 127 litres a day. Now the English and Welsh pay for their water separately while the Scots commonly pay for water and sewerage services as part of their council tax. The amount is linked to their property's council tax band.  While water meters are the norm south of the border they are almost non existent north of it.  Knowing how much you are paying makes consumers use less it seems.  You were told at school that to Loch Ness contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, but industry experts worry with dryer weather unwelcome change will come. So they are urging Scots to be less profligate and preserve water as amongst other things it’s a vital ingredient in making the world’s wonder, Scotch Whisky.

Now we here at James Pirie wouldn’t countenance profligacy, not at all. So with Father’s Day just around the corner we want you to make the most of the pound in your pocket and reward the man in your life with something to contain the nectar that is fine whisky.   Try the  half price gorgeousness that is the thistle themed Flower of Scotland Whisky Tumbler in a barrel shape from Royal Scot Crystal. These are truly beautiful and look better in person than they do in the picture (though they look very nice online). I was highly impressed with beauty, quality, and the speed of delivery.

A Christmas present for my son, a young bourbon drinker 'getting into' scotch. Flower of Scotland glass seemed an obvious choice (even for an Englishman); and your website was recommended by a Scot.
