Enter Your Own Bronze Age

When you go out for a walk are you looking to discover the past, or just have a gentle ramble in the hills? Well one detectorist has a firm answer to that and it’s the first one. He’s pretty lucky too. In the Borders he’s discovered two hauls of 3,000 years old Bronze Age booty. The latest treasure was only 7 miles away from where he discovered the so called “Peebles Hoard” just 6 years ago. This new find had been dubbed the “Blyth Hoard” and it dates from 1150BC to 850BC when our ancestors were still making tools from bronze not yet of iron.

It is heady stuff for the archaeologists what with axe heads and a copper ingot which experts say is the first of its kind to be found in the nation. There’s even what looks like pottery moulds which werelikely  used for the casting of bronze. The find is now in an Edinburgh museum for evaluation and like the “Peebles Hoard” it may be bought for the Scottish nation to keep it within the country. To make one significant find is unusual, but to make two is immensely lucky and demonstrates the pluck and determination of the detectorist in question. The law in Scotland is that treasure trove must be reported to a special unit and big finds may be grabbed by the Crown and the strangely named Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer and between them they can save it for the nation’s benefit.

And if you want some treasure trove too and to progress to your own Bronze Age then what could be better than the instant heirloom that is a Richard Cooper Bronze.
