Runaway Dog Frays Hearts
It happened in Australia and is it about to happen in Scotland now? Valerie a much loved dachshund went feral for 16 months on Kangaroo Island and was able to evade capture for 529 days. The sausage dog was eventually lured into a specially designed cage for her, which had food, her toys and bits of T shirt worn by her owner from home and then trapped by remote control. And now Louie the two year old golden retriever from Fort William has done a runner too and is much missed by his owners.
Louie is quite an interesting dog because he’s afraid of sheep. I know a dog who also afraid of sheep and that is Max who I have written about before. Max is a Working Cocker and he was butted by one of shepherd Adam’s sheep in the field next door to his house. Since then he has had a terror of the woolly nitwits. And as someone who has rounded up sheep I can testify to their stupidity and ability to do the unexpected. It’s Max’s picture above, cuddly isn’t he?
But I digress Louie is cuddly too and he’s been off the leash very near to Ben Nevis for over two weeks now. He is an emotional support animal and so his loss strikes even harder for the teenage girl who needs him most. She has epilepsy and Louie keeps her calm and reduces her symptoms, barking when she is about to have an attack. But hope is still there for the golden runaway and barking has been heard far and wide in what is one of the remotest and wildest spots in these isles. Volunteers and drones have been scouring the mountains looking for the dog. The drones were paid for by an internet whip round by friends, neighbours and well wishers. A post on FaceBook saw interest and page views from nearly half a million people and the owners have received messages of support from as far afield as the USA and Canada. Just checking on the latest news I hear that barking is still being heard, but let’s just hope that Louie is a resourceful and resilient as Valerie on Kangaroo Island and is welcomed back into the bosom of the family soon enough.
