Sir Andy and the Shortbread Heritage

In the week when Andy Murray became a chat show personality on stage and the face of shortbread it’s fantastic to see the Great Scot can still pull in the crowds, with sold out venues for his Evening with Andy Murray tour in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. I was gutted when I realised we had missed the opportunity to see him and of course we will miss him when we make the long pilgrimage to Wimbledon in a couple of weeks not to seeing him play, not even in mixed doubles.

Despite heritage I am not a great shortbread fan, but that’s because I have a savoury tooth not a sweet one. I am much more a fan of the oat cake than the sugary things.  But when Sir Andy becomes the face of haggis I’m all in! Although a little birdie told me that in every bedroom in Andy and Kim’s Cromlix hotel near Dunblane is a packet of shortbread labelled Andy’s Granny Erskine’s shortbread secret recipe. Which conjures a picture for me of Andy and Kim in pinnies slaving away in the kitchen, making the shortbread with the occasional strop from Andy if they’ve burnt the biscuits! Oh yes I’ve been witness to many a Murray moment of bad temper on the court.

The royal warranted shortbread manufacturer has been in business in Speyside since 1898 and I thought that’s a long time, but then I remembered that James Pirie was founded in St Andrews some eight years earlier  and a has a similarly storied history as they say in the modern P R speak.  And it’s a heritage we are justly proud of and that’s the second time I’ve used that word in the blog, but it is one we shouldn’t be afraid of in the least.

If you’d like to have a slice of the history of James Pirie of St Andrews then I’d like to make a few recommendations.
