Don’t Be Bamboozled -Shop James Pirie

A couple of years ago I came across the beast in the picture above sticking out of our drive.  What could it be, I thought?  So I kicked it experimentally and it just swayed lightly. I called the missus and we dug down a bit to see what it might be and we came to the terrifying conclusion it was bamboo! Now I don’t suppose most people know a lot about this plant, but it’s a terror. I had mostly seen it in my trips to Hong Kong where they used bamboo as scaffolding poles, because it’s so cheap there. In a British garden it is akin to the dreaded Japanese Knotweed, which as we all know is a notifiable  foreign plant.

Now the gardeners of Scotland have been warned about the dreaded bamboo, which is so vigorous that it  can burrow its way under your foundations and  might even emerge in the living room looking for light!  The worst of bamboo is called Running Bamboo and this species should never be planted in soil in the garden only in a sturdy pot. Sturdy because the plant is so strong it can break out of most pots and then spread in the rest of the garden.  It’s been popular with gardeners since the 90s and it provides a good refuge for birds, insects and small beasties, but whoa betide anyone who lets it get hold near a house. It can cause thousands and thousands of pounds worth of damage.  Parts of these isles are in “Bamboo Crisis” according Scotland’s most popular daily paper.

So if you heed those words you won’t be bamboozled by the Asian plant and if you shop on the James Pirie website we promise not to bamboozle you at all.
