100 Year Old Whisky Hits the Heights
I’ve written before on the crackers world of whisky connoisseurship where rare examples of the golden nectar are sold for humongous amounts and the worldwide thirst for the unique is unquenchable. After the world record for a bottle of the honey coloured fluid sold in 2023 now a rare bottle of Scotch whisky from the same tiny batch has been sold for£2.1m by an Edinburgh auction house. The event was held at the distillery, another first itself in the thirst for fine whisky. The original brew was laid down a century ago at the same time as Scot John Logie Baird was inventing the television and the country was stricken by the General Strike in the aftermath of the Great War.
The whisky was laid down in a matured sherry barrel where it drew upon the flavours from the oak and then in 1986 it was identified as something truly special, and a mere 40 bottle were drawn. It was so special that world famous artists were commissioned to design labels for the heavenly brew. And now after 60 years maturing in the cask and 40 years in the bottle the distillers are ready to sell to the waiting throng. This particular bottle didn’t have the artistic label, but a restrained simple one which emphasises the rarity of the whisky which is one of the most valuable in the world. And now it seems that there are only 39 bottles of the nectar left as one of the 40 was lost during a Japanese earthquake.
So I imagine that few of our esteemed customers have £2.1m rattling round in their sporran, but many will be lovers of quality whisky and many others will know someone who is a whisky fan and who would appreciate a gift of fine glasses to go with their fine malt. Among these can I introduce you to the thistle inspired Flower of Scotland barrel shaped Whisky Tumblers from Royal Scot Crystal?
