This week the baby foxes are back. The missus went swimming and left her swim shoes outside the back door to dry and in the twilight the fox cubs seized their opportunity and grabbed the shoes. It seems they are teething and like a bit of soft plastic to chew. We came down the following morning to find only one of the shoes complete with a smelly little present inside the shoe. Cue lots of sighing...

Do you know someone who gulps down his food as if it’s going out of fashion, then he may be called a ‘ gannet’ that seabird with the ravenous reputation? But the feisty gannet is in fact a very fine member of the avian world and one that graces our seashores of the nation. And the world's largest colony of gannets is on Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. Just last year the gannets on the rock, which...

Did you know that a ship’s canvas sails used to be made out of flax? Long before the advent of polyester and its sister materials the wind power of old was harnessed by this old fashioned plant, which used to be a staple crop in Scotland. Now with the world focused on trimming carbon footprints and changing our ways the crop is getting a reboot, it’s now Flax 2.0.
Flax is used to make linen and canvas...

Herend… eth the Lesson
Some things are a luxury and some luxuries turn out to be essential, but even something you bought for £1, can be a pain in the Trossachs and especially if that something was valued at £2 million and then ends up costing you £150,000 to get rid of!
That is exactly what has happened to the wave machine that was to be used off Orkney to power 2,000 homes with cheap renewable electricity...

I’m in shock at the moment, I was cleaning the missus’s pride and joy, her DeLonghi Magnifica coffee making machine, and it managed to get mangled it in a way the manufacturers might has said was inventive. So I’ll be forming an orderly queue at the telephone for when they open on this grey Monday morning. They pick them up and take them back to the repair shop for fixing, no roving engineers...

Barbara Dickson the beloved Scottish singer and National Treasure is about to go on her very last tour after 60 years on the hoof from stage to stage and perhaps those words are appropriate to her too. It’s a journey that’s taken her from the dingy folk clubs of Fife to...

In another life I once sent an inflatable sheep to the Greek Ambassador to the Court of St James. Explanation, I was looking for a quotable reaction, so I could publicise it in the national newspapers, but the canny Athenian didn’t make a squeak and the stunt died without a noise. You may ask me why I needed a quote from His Excellency, but my lips are sealed on a terrible TV show that sank without...

Do you have space for a six foot tall whisky bottle in your home, well a Vietnamese businessman does? Admittedly he’s already got more than the odd dram, with a whisky collection valued at some £150m, so you wouldn’t want to drop one of his bottles. The bottle in question cost £1.1m and was sold at auction last year in the Nation’s capital. The vessel was filled with about 311 litres or about 550 pints...

Now giant pandas are undeniably cute. They are the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund and they are the number one attraction at Edinburg Zoo, but they are also infuriating animals. The inflexibility of the creatures is well known. They aren’t the least bit interested in having sex, they live mostly alone and have the very devil of a job to reproduce, even when conditions are ideal. Their fertility cycle...
