In another life I once sent an inflatable sheep to the Greek Ambassador to the Court of St James. Explanation, I was looking for a quotable reaction, so I could publicise it in the national newspapers, but the canny Athenian didn’t make a squeak and the stunt died without a noise. You may ask me why I needed a quote from His Excellency, but my lips are sealed on a terrible TV show that sank without trace. Now in Scotland life size animal inflatables are being put to a rather nobler end.
I’ve written before about the mass whale strandings that have disfigured our shores in recent years, often the result of man’s intervention and nuisance in the seas. In July there was a mass stranding on the Isle of Lewis in July when an entire pod of 55 pilot whales which could not be rescued and all the mammals died. One theory is that one of the highly sociable species got into difficulties giving birth and the rest of the pod were unwilling to abandon the female, stayed with her and all suffered in the end.
Well volunteers are now using inflatable model pilot whales in Largs to simulate these mass strandings and discover the real life snags that would hit any operation to rescue the poor creatures caught on our shores. British Divers Marine Life Rescue, BDMLR, organised the event and many lessons were learned as the helpers found out at first-hand what difficulties would lay before them.
And lessons are always being learned at James Pirie, even though we’ve been in business since 1890, we aren’t afraid to embrace the new fangled, while clinging to our noble heritage, no hive mind here. And the buzz is this is bee- utiful flared vase a glorious part of Royal Scot Crystal's Bee & Honeysuckle Giftware Collection inspired by our love of nature’s busiest buzzers.
