Barbara Dickson's Last Hurrah
And now, the end is near And so I face the final curtain My friends, I'll say it clear I'll state my case of which I'm certain
Barbara Dickson the beloved Scottish singer and National Treasure is about to go on her very last tour after 60 years on the hoof from stage to stage and perhaps those words are appropriate to her too. It’s a journey that’s taken her from the dingy folk clubs of Fife to the hearts of the many, Top Ten hits and West End success. The high point commercially was a number 1 duo with Elaine Page, but that was way back in 1984. The song was crafted by Abba’s gifted music partners Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with lyrics by Tim Rice. And by the way have you been to Abba Voyage in East London. We got given tickets, otherwise we couldn’t have afforded all the travel , but it was a glorious nostalgia fest and the audience we nearly as entertaining as the show! And it was just oldies, there was every age there.
Songstress Barbara isn’t a fan of all of today’s music because a lot of it is auto-tuned. On a newspaper I was once sent off to investigate this type of fakery and I had to report that it could make any old croaker like me sound great, but it makes all the songs sound the same, like a Disney soundtrack. The farewell tour for the ever youthful singer, now aged 75, will start in Edinburgh and finish in Manchester, where the singer thanks she’ll dissolve into a puddle of tears. But even when she’s retired to Old Reekie where she now lives, she’ll always have a place in the nation’s heart , especially as she’s releasing a last album My Own Adventure which includes a return to her roots in folk music.
