Wow What an Offer!
This Black Friday we give a nod to the greatness of the national treasure that is whisky, which is one of the nation’s biggest exports. Last year Scotland exported over £5.6 billion worth of Scotch, which makes the nectar the world's top-selling spirit. Now on Barra in the Outer Hebrides they are taking advantage of this world wide liking of the spirit and opening a big new £12 million distillery which they hope will counteract the effects of an ageing population on the island. The new distillery is scheduled to produce more than 300,000 bottles of single malt a year.
The owners had already opened a new distillery in 2017 making new age spirits particularly gin, rum and vodka. And it is this distillery that will have a new baby brother making single malt whisky and which it is hoped will provide many much needed jobs on the island when it opens in 2026. Previously Barra has been overly dependent on fishing, which is a really tough occupation and means fishers spending huge amounts of time away from home in a very dangerous occupation. The new distillery is likely to very quickly become the island’s largest employer and a good reason for the young folk to stay on the island or even come there from elsewhere..
One of my favourite authors growing up was Compton Mackenzie, writer of Whisky Galore, a tale about the shipwreck of a vessel carrying whisky. The author used to live just a stone’s throw from the new distillery. How he would have loved the irony of fully legal Scotch being made on his doorstep.
