Whisky Prices Frisky, James Pirie Prices Set Fair
This year what with the credit squeeze and the cost of living crisis me and the missus have started doing our Christmas shopping early, not to avoid the rush, but to pick up bargains where we can and set them aside for the festive time and spread the cost over a few months. This frugal urge doesn’t apply to all though as someone has paid £2.1m for a bottle of the true nectar, whisky. A single bottle of Macallan 1926 was sold at an auction in London making it a new world record. It was a surprise that the whisky reached such a high as the highest estimate was just under half of the final amount achieved.
Those of you who watched the excellent 007 film Skyfall, with the peculiar villain Silva played by Javier Bardem might remember the execution scene in Hong Kong where the hero is offered his last drink, a 50 year old Macallan as proof that the drink is immensely good and immensely famous. The glorious richly flavoured fluid had spent 60 years in a dark European oak barrel and tasted so it was said of dried fruit, a lot of spice and a lot of wood. It is called the Adami 1926 and only 40 bottles were filled way back in 1986, and then given away to customers and at almost a hundred years old it is the oldest Macallan vintage ever produced by the distillers.
Now the buyers of the Macallan vintage may have no need or wish to spot a bargain, but with the gift season upon once again can I direct you to the Black Friday Sale?
