Bargains for Eager Beavers

I don’t know about you, but last week I had to drive through floods on three occasions and one was so deep I was feared that the car would stall and me and the missus would have to wade to safety and leave the darn thing in the water. However, we made it through and I had a moan about how we wouldn’t have had that problem if we still had my ancient Jeep which I sold not so long ago. So flood measures are very much on the agenda these days and the fore in our thoughts round here.  Lots of people think that old ways restored would help this situation and slow down rainfall reaching flood proportions.

In the Cairngorms they are set to release beavers in the National Park with the idea that they will enhance the wetland environments, as they say in the jargon . Beavers were eradicated in Scotland about 400 years ago but were reintroduced to Scotland in 2009 in a re-wilding project. The animals for the Cairngorms are likely to be relocated from around the River Tay, where they have been more than a bit of a nuisance to farmers, who view them as a pest. And the new habitat will be within the catchment of the River Spey between Aviemore and Kingussie. The local farmers in the new release area are up in arms at the re-wilding, fearing they will create the same kind of problems that were seen on the Tay. But experts maintain the creatures will benefit the land by building dams made of local tree trunks, branches and twigs. These dams slow the flow of water from streams and ditches and delay that water from draining away downstream where flooding might otherwise occur and restore freshwater habitat. It’s certainly an issue for our times as we deal with the more extreme weather we seem to be witnessing.

So to take our minds off the weather, as the rain beats heavily against my window and sea is roaring in the background, we have made some drastic reductions to cheer you up.  Take a look at the lovely Winter Hare by Royal Crown Derby in a presentation box.  This classy piece features winter foliage of Jasmine, Hellebore, Holly and Mistletoe, with 22 carat gold detailing on the ears, nose and feet.
