Tinsel Town Loves Scotland

I’ve not been wowed by the release of a spin off to the great TV series Outlander, but that’s just because the characters can never be as interesting and multi-faceted as Jamie and Claire in the original, but for those who need their fix Blood of My Blood is streaming now. However, away from the enormous plasma screen, Hollywood is still exploring history with only the occasional tongue in cheek.  Earlier this year The Return boasted both Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche together for the first time since The English Patient , what was that film about all those years ago? It was the return of Odysseus from his odyssey and involved a lot of bare chests and random violence. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now it seems that the great and good of Tinsel Town are choosing to film once more in Scotland and once more it’s the story of the Odyssey.

Big screen big hitters Matt Damon The Martian, and Tom Holland Spiderman have taken to swords and sandals like good ‘uns all under the direction of the maestro Christopher Nolan, who knows a thing or two about confusing plots. If you are wondering what does a poem written some 3,000 years ago have to do with Scotland, then think of wild scenery, rugged hills and lovely film subsidies. All of which have tempted the film making elite to the nation. Obviously Scotland doesn’t do unrelenting sunshine, but Morocco, Greece and Sicily have provided those.

If you want to visit the places where they filmed, head to Burghead in Moray , Culbin Forest and the Moray Firth coast, the fishing port of Buckie and the ruins of Findlater Castle near Cullen.  The movie will be released next July. Much of Scottish tourism has been uplifted by the Outlander series which was all filmed in this country, apart from a few bits in South Africa so we all welcome film units boosting local economies. And the fantastic TV series Bridgerton lifted our sales when they featured James Pirie glassware in their party scenes.

Now we can’t boost your economy, what with the weather turning foul at the moment but we can put a warm feeling into your life and leave your pocket less ravaged.
