Out of This World

There is  wonderfully named  organisation called the Fireball Alliance that tracks meteors and meteorites across the country and they have issued a plea  for those wandering the hills and conquering Munros to look out for bits of debris from a pretty big space object that fell on the 3rd July this year.  It wasn’t like the blips of light that you get from the very small meteorites that we see in  July and August Perseid meteor showers. It was an event that was seen from Edinburgh  to the Isle of Lewis. There’s many a Ring doorbell with footage of this fairly large object bashing into the Earth’s atmosphere and burning up with the friction of it all.

But those clever Fireball people have identified the likely area where fragments of the space debris could be found and they have alerted trekkers and climbers to be on the look out for the meteor fragments: Which might even be too heavy to lift. For the smaller bit they reckon you can pop the remains into a sandwich bag or clean aluminium foil. But don’t pick them up with bare hands it seems, to preserve the rocks untainted by our planet. These fragments will tell us more about the early life of our solar system. The  so called “fall zone “covers a 20km area near Dalwhinnie, but most are likely to have fallen on Ben Alder's plateau which which covers a large area above 1,000 metres, and is one of the most isolated Munros  witha four hour trek just to get there..
