The Windmills of Your Mind- Or at Least Your Horizon
Now if you live round the shores of these islands you will have noticed stuff happening on your sea horizons. It is the planting of wind turbines as we move to renewable energy. This involves giant windmills sometimes as tall as the Eiffel Tower. Everyone acknowledges this is kind of intermediate technology with floating turbines seemingly the future, but for the next 25 years these giants are going to dominate landscapes at sea and on land. There is a wind field planned for just in front of our beach, though they will be 8 or 9 miles out, so love them or loathe them they will be here for the foreseeable future.
But unalloyed good news is a Chinese wind turbine manufacturer setting up a huge factory in the nation. There is a shortlist of sites for the factory, but Ardersier in the Highlands has been identified as the preferred option. This is fantastic news for an area where employment is somewhat thin on the ground. It is said it will come with up to 1500 jobs, which to be honest is brilliant and they reckon to be up and running by 2028. Ardesier is a Free Port which comes with all sorts of tax and customs incentives, so international big business has taken note. I just hope no one has told the Chinese about the weather, except to say there’s plenty of wind in those parts! The initiative won’t be so much Belt and Road as Mac and Wellies!
