Bright Sparks at the Charge – Ferries and Christmas Deliveries
After the hoo-ha that followed the British Antarctic Survey trying to name a ship by public voting Calmac the ferry operators have learned the lesson. There was to be no Boaty McBoatface moment. The saga began with a new survey ship being launched by the Science Museum down in London which gambled with allowing the general public to choose the name. Much banter and tom foolery ensued. Boaty eventually became the name of an underwater drone and the ship became the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
So when some bright spark at Calmac asked the public to select ferry names they gave them a list of 16 names that were pre-approved to choose from. But since the new ferries are to be electric powered many opportunities for jest have been lost because I suspect their fears would be well grounded if they hadn’t short circuited the process. These battery charged ships are being built in Poland and are due to be delivered in 2027. I suppose that they have to be powered in that way because otherwise the flex would be too long. The vessels will serve on a number of crossings in Argyll and Bute and the Hebrides The ferries names are Loch Shiel, Loch Etive, Loch Katrine, Loch Maree, Loch Morar, Loch Rannoch and Loch Awe. Let’s hope that Loch Awe isn’t aweful!
