Suckers Found in Scotland- Rare 7 Legged Octopus Find
Now I know it’s a bit nitpicky, but is a seven legged octopus found on the beach in Scotland an octopus as the name means eight legs? Still it gives me the chance for a few tired old fish based chestnuts. There’s no plaice like home, the sole survivor, I’m not codding you, don’t be so crabby, it’s a load of pollock, sorry about these puns, skating on thin ice there. You are ‘welk ome’ you say! So the news that suckered me in this week was the discovery of strange tentacles on the beach at Forvie National Nature Reserve in Collieston, Aberdeenshire. Now regular readers will know that I live on the beach, but the strangest thing we have seen was Crabageddon, the huge mortality of crabs, that saw thousands upon thousands of the beasties two feet deep on our shoreline a few years ago in lockdown, but giant sucker legs would be an even stranger one.
The tentacles belong to the very rare Haliphron Atlanticus, a seven legged octopus which normally lives at depths of 500 metres plus so not your usual find on a Scottish sea shore. The creatures can grow up to 4 metres long so they are no tiddlers. And the answer to my first questions is that they are octopuses because there is a small eighth leg used for reproduction. The seas around Aberdeenshire are shallow by ocean standards so it’s a mystery as to why Septimus, my name for the octopus, should end up there at all.
