I got several messages this last week or so saying: ‘Did you see the Northern Lights?’ And I had to answer no to every single one of them. We had gone on a holiday to Norway in 2023 to see the Aurora Borealis as it should be known and we had seen the lights, but not in all their glory. It was rather as a pale, ghostly light which only became coloured in a photograph taken with a long exposure of say five seconds. But when the lights were visible in these parts I was too exhausted from Do It Yourself to last beyond ten o’clock at night. I’d been chipping concrete off a wall until the cows came home. Even the cows weren’t home early! But you see my phot eforts fro Norway above. But my excuse of tiredness making me skip the lights wasn’t as crazy as the mistake two friends made in Norfolk. We all know Sir Lenny Henry and the hotel he favours, but would you mistake it for the Aurora Borealis? The men had previously visited Iceland to try and see the Northern Lights and were disappointed when they didn’t see them in that land of ice. But imagine their glee when they saw a beautiful purple haze in the sky above Norwich. They immediately put it onto a social media video sharing site and got seven million views, only to find out that the purple glow was the city’s Premier Inn, all lit up at night. It made the hotel chain’s day though, but it wasn’t the real McCoy.
