The Falkirk Kelpies 10 Years On

It’s a whole decade since the wonderful Kelpies sculptures were unveiled in Helix Park between Falkirk and Grangemouth. Happy anniversary Kelpies! They stand at 100ft tall and weigh in at a Champion the Wonder Horse 100 metric tonnes each. They are modelled on the lovely Clydesdale horses  Baron and Duke owned by Glasgow City Council. The much loved Baron died in 2017 at the age of 19 who gave much joy to generations of Glasgow children.  The Kelpies were designed to bring world attention to the area and in that they have succeeded greatly.

One of the first visitors was the late Queen and she agreed with the general view that they were a modern marvel. The giant sculptures were created by a  well known Scottish artist and they have become the kind of landmark artwork that the slightly less impressive Angel of the North on the A1. They are lit up at night and are a spectacular feature. They represent the giant Clydesdales that heaved and pulled the canal barges, ploughs and brewery drays in bygone days.

That’s really, really popular in Scotland terms.
