Sir Andy on the Last Laps
Now if you’ve read my blog before you will know that I and the missus are ardent fans of that Great Scot, Sir Andy Murray and his glorious achievements at a time when the greatest players of tennis, ever, where all playing at the same time. He is a former World Number 1, holder of three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic Gold Medals and forty-six career titles. Now he’s back on the trail of more titles and eased through to the second round of the Bordeaux Open and had the crowd sing Happy Birthday to him. Yes he’s thirty-seven this week. By jings, that’s gone fast! He’s also just changed his racquet supplier after many a long year.
Andy had ruptured ankle ligaments suffered at the Miami Open in March and his return to clay is just in time for the French Open. If ever you want to get a measure of the warrior that is Andrew Barron Murray I suggest that you watch his documentary Resurfacing about his new hip after devastating injury. He’s a mentality monster!
Now all things come to an end and I have had the privilege of seeing Sir Andy play in the flesh several times, often injured, but always making super human efforts, because for him tennis isn’t just a sport, it’s his reason for being. And so in marking the final chapter of our Great Scot we can look back on his humongous achievements and worry where the next great Scottish players are going to come from. My missus even saw him win Wimbledon for the first time in 2013, even though she was taken out for a set by the St John’s Ambulance when she fainted. She is very fair and can’t take the heat at all, but she was around for the final set when Andy beat Novak Djokovic and became the first from these isles to win Wimbledon since the 1930s. Great memories!
