The Granite Hosts Tall Ships Race- We Host Grand Summer Sale

The Granite City Aberdeen this week is the home to the biggest free tourist attraction in Scotland , it’s The Tall Ships Races where some 50 tall ships will be taking part with their 2,000 crew from distant place like Oman and Uruguay. It’s such a big event, despite the inclement weather this year that it will attract some 400,000 visits, which doesn’t mean that many individuals as they count return visits by the same people.  However, the city will be inundated with tourists and everyone is warned about travelling as little as possible by car.  The ships will include the elegant Alexander von Humboldt II from Germany and the impressive Belem from France,  the Capitán Miranda, from Uruguay, the  Christian Radich from Norway, and the Dar Mlodziezy, her name means "the gift of youth." The Dar Mlodziezy is from Poland and  is the tallest ship in the race  at 62.5m (205ft) high. She was built in 1982. She made her Tall Ships debut in the same year. It’s a splendid sight. I’ve included a picture I took of tall ships, but not in Aberdeen.  Can you guess where?

Even though the ships look incredibly old they have often been constructed in the fairly recent past to function as sail training ships.  Aberdeen has previously hosted the tall ships in 1991 and 1997 and the event goes back as far as 1973 when the races were called the Cutty Sark race. The vessels are divided into four classes, ranging from large sailing ships to smaller single-masted boats.

For those wanting to visit the ships most of them are open to the public and there will events and music gigs to entertain the throng . The ships are berthed in Waterloo Quay, Regent Quay, Trinity Quay, Upper Quay, Jamieson's Quay and Blaikies Quay.  The events run until Tuesday when the ships will sail to Norway across the North Sea.
