The Flying Scotsman Breaks World Record-

If you are of a certain age you’ll remember the film Chariots of Fire in which a Scottish sprinter, Eric Liddell, triumphed in the Olympics at a time when life was very different. A Devout Christian Liddell wouldn’t join the 100 metres heat as they were held on a Sunday, the Sabbath. So instead he elected to run in an unfamiliar event the 400 metres and guess what he won! And now in the great tradition of athletics in the nation Scotland has a  new world record in the mile.

Well done to Josh Kerr the 28 year old Scot who is part of a new golden generation of Scottish middle distance, male and female runners who has broken the mile record.  It’s a record that had not been broken since the turn of the century and it was cracked in front of a sell out crowd south of the border at the London Stadium, in a Diamond League meeting. The record breaking time was 3min 42.66sec nearly a second faster than the old one. Kerr had previously won the 1,500m world title in 2023 Olympic silver over the same distance in 2024 and 2 world indoor titles over 3,000m.

After his record breaking run the Scots athlete was presented with a commemorative book featuring the names of all the previous mile world-record holders. Including Dr Roger Bannister who was the world’s first man to run a sub four minute mile.  And Britain has had 13 mile record breakers since 1913, almost as far back as when we here at James Pirie were established in 1890!
