If They handed out Awards for Ugly

Two Mexican Walking Fish have been put on show at Edinburgh Zoo. They are remarkable for being able to grow extra arms and legs if they are torn off. They are also not strictly speaking fish, they are salamanders, called axolotl, Well, trying saying that while gargling. They live all their lives in water and the literal translation of their name is water monsters, poor wee things

These walkers have peculiar fish-like gills on the outside of their heads and have been on the critically endangered Red list of the IUCN for some time. Outside of captivity they might even be extinct.

Walking Fish Supper?

A while back, a century or three ago they were so numerous in Mexico that they were part of the staple Aztec diet, but you can’t ask for an axolotl supper any more. Not even with chips. Modern life has just taken away their habitat.

Tiny Smilers

Experts like the fish as they always look so darn cheerful, despite their unprepossessing looks. These days they live only in one lake called Xochimilco which is near Mexico City, one of the world’s most crowded spaces.

Our Handsome Pair

We can’t match the tiny axolotl for looks or cheerful appearance, but we can put a smile on your face with a thirty pounds off offer on the Border Fine Arts - Different Points of View wildlife sculpture. This fine piece features two kinds of woodpeckers, lesser spotted and greater spotted on the same branch.
