‘Dreich’ tops poll as nation’s favourite Scots word
A poll refelecting Scotland’s national obsession with the weather has made ‘dreich’ as Scotland’s favourite word in the Scots language.
The Language of Burns
The survey by You Gov asked adults across the country to choose their favourite Scots word. The list included many of Robert Burn’s own favourites, like, ‘sleekit,’ ‘beastie’ and ‘braw.’ from a list of words shown to respondents.
Nearly a quarter of those questioned went with the whether option, that is whether to talk about the weather or not, proving Scotland's obsession with our often ‘dreich’ weather.
Scores on the Doors
The word ‘dreich’ meaning ‘wet’, ‘cold’ and ‘gloomy’ trumped other classics such as ‘glaikit’, ‘blether’ came in third and ‘crabbit’ managed a little over ten per cent, so nothing to be grumpy about there.
Not Timourous
The wonderful words of Burns came in low on the poll with the fabulous ‘Sleekit’ getting only six per cent while ‘beastie’ was a per cent lower and the wonderful word ‘braw’ bobbled along with ‘sleekit.’
No Blether
In keeping with stereotype images of the female population the lassies across the country also proved their love for gossip with nearly a fifth of female Scots voting ‘blether’ as their number one word, while ‘glaikit’ was very popular with respondents in their thirties and forties. I’ll no ‘haiver’ about the result.
