Well I’m sitting here in my office facing the sea and the wind is howling and the rain is pelting across the sky and banging on the window demanding to be let in. But I’ve spent the autumn well and the house is pretty snug despite the beginnings of the winter. And it’s the same throughout the nation. Those responsible for connecting us all are implementing plans to keep everything going despite the worst of the climate. They call them resilience preparations and they are darn well needed to keep the rail, road, and ferry networks going. You will know my fondness for the comically named gritters, but there’s a load of heavy and expensive machinery required to keep the show on the road in what they laughingly call ”challenging conditions.”
There’s a 20 strong fleet of the tree clearing unimogs made in Germany which are deployed, that’s a military word, to clear fallen trees from the railway lines, but 20 may not be a huge number when Scotland is so incredibly big. Calmac too is readying it’s ferries for the gales of the season and on the roads the gritters are ready to do their bit.
