Straddling the Past and Future
The future as they say is only ever a day away. And with the march of tech it’s hard to turn your eyes up from your screen to appreciate how fast things are going; and a lot of this change is coming from drones. I’ve had a bit of experience with these tiny flying machines. I had a German client when I was producing advertising films for foreign film makers and they wanted to fly a drone in two places in London. Well nobody can fly anything in the English capital without reams of permissions from a blizzard of authorities, so we didn’t get up in the air outside at all. But they also wanted to fly inside a large indoor space, so I persuaded the owners of a building with an enormous atrium to let us fly inside the space. It all went very well for 15 minutes until the operator lost control and the drone smashed into the glass ceiling and crashed to earth, luckily no damage done except to the tiny aircraft. The ad we made for a German lorry maker was a big success even so.
Let’s hope that the inhabitants of Argyll and Bute have more luck with the delivery drones that are coming to them soon. It will be vital medical supplies that will be dropped off in the near future with a half a million investment by the UK government and partnership between a drone company and Argyll and Bute Council which is Scotland's second largest local authority with 23 inhabited islands.
This isn’t the first time that drone delivery has been tried in the more remote parts of the nation and previous efforts have been occasionally disappointing, but recent developments with remote flying for drones round the world have given everyone a great sense of optimism and the use of remote drones will likely become a vital part of life in Scotland’s rural communities delivering vital medicine in fast efficient manner. The UK's first commercial drone mail service is between Stromness, in the Orkney mainland from the islands of Hoy and Graemsay mail has been extended to 2026.
But here at James Pirie we believe we can take the best of the past and ally it to the best of the future and we have to say we have no plans at the moment to deliver crystal by drones, but we do have fantastic delivery partners who go above and beyond especially in the upcoming Christmas period.
