Beavers Are Back in The Highlands - But James Pirie Declare Customers Most Important
Well that’s it -the clocks have gone back and we’re all adjusting to the new time. Animals have a harder time adjusting. My missus is nursing a friend who has had had an operation and she was driven mad yesterday by the friend’s six cats going mad with hunger because they hadn’t adjusted to the clock change. But such time shifting won’t have affected the newly released beavers in the north-west highlands at Beinn a Mheadhoin dam in the Glen Affric national nature reserve. There are now six family groups of the dam building beasties and the hope is that they will improve the area’s resilience against flooding and improve water quality. Now it’s been a while since the animals were native to the nation and they were hunted to extinction some 400 years ago, though since 2009 there have been attempts to reintroduce the species to Scotland.
The beavers will do what they do, which is create dams that will slow water flow and create a more diverse habitat for other creatures. Beaver skins were highly prized for making waterproof hats in the 18th and 19th century and indeed Abe Lincoln’s stove pipe hat was made from this material. To stop hunters returning to the scene the creatures have declared a protected species.
And for us here at James Pirie we are declaring our customers as a protected species too. Nothing is too good for our wonderful buyers.
