No Shrinkflation Here
There was of course shrinkflation when because of economic pressures the size of servings or products got smaller, but now we have renaming, as cocoa has become so expensive our favourite chocolate bars can no longer be described as chocolate. Particularly two of the nations favourite the Club bar and the Penguin bar. It’s particularly ironic as the marketing slogan for the Club offering was: "If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, join our club".
Why this has happened is the squeeze on cocoa production which has had a bad weather year with drought where cocoa is produced in Ivory Coast and Ghana. Prices have tripled in recent months, so the choice was to reduce the size of the bars, up their prices or change the formulation of the offering. It was decided to do the latter. For milk chocolate to be classified as such, UK regulations say it should be made up of about 20% cocoa solids, in the EU regulations stipulate a minimum of 25% of cocoa. Which means that officially the bars are no longer classified as chocolate instead they are confectionery, and ooh that doesn’t sound so nice! No I am a chocolate lover and I have noticed sky high prices in recent times, Easter eggs are an outrageous price, dark chocolate is extortionate and now Club and Penguin have fallen by the wayside. They’ll taste the same, but less top class ingredients perhaps.
