Spudulike – That Ain’t No Potato
Have you ever found anything interesting on your garden fork or spade, well me neither? But 70 years ago a schoolboy was digging up potatoes in the gardens of his school in Fife and dug up what the thought was a spud, but it was far from that. It was in fact a 4,000 year old treasure. The lad was being punished for a misdemeanour, but he found a genuine piece of ancient history. The “spud” was in fact from Ancient Egypt and was a mid-12th dynasty red sandstone statue head from circa 1922-1855 BC. Melville House in Fife housed Dalhousie School way back when and that is where the treasure was unearthed, but it didn’t stop there. Fourteen years after that an Egyptian bronze votive small statue of a bull, from about 664-332 BC, was found in the same school grounds. The naughty school boy who found the first treasure was the teacher supervising the unearthing of the second treasure, but he disappeared with the statuette and it was never seen again. Ker-Ching!
Then in 1984 teenagers from the school, a young offenders unit at the time, brought in yet another ancient Egyptian bronze figurine of a man, from about 747-656 BC. The figurine represented a priest bringing offerings. Further exploration of the site found other objects, ranging from the top of faience figurine of the goddess Isis suckling her son Horus and part of a faience plaque showing the Eye of Horus, just like the BBC show Only Connect.
