Did the Earth Move for You?
Parts of Scotland were hit by an earthquake this week, but it wasn’t a biggie. It measured just 2.1 ML on the Richter Scale which is what we might otherwise call a tremor. Each time you go up on the Richter Scale it goes up by a magnitude of ten. So 3.1 is ten times bigger than 2.1. On the 3rd December the earthquake was felt in Morvern in the Highlands in the middle of the afternoon. And those reporting the quake were as far apart as Mallaig and Morar in the Highlands and on the island of Lismore in the Inner Hebrides. There was a big noise and some trembling they say. Since the beginning of October Morvern has been hit by 10 mini earthquakes.
It is such a rare even on the highly stable and geologically ancient Highlands and Islands that the British Geological Survey went so far as to ask for those experiencing the tremor to report their experiences. I went on the earthquake simulator at the Natural History Museum on a visit to London and it mimicked the 1995 Kobe, Japan earthquake. It was pretty spooky! The Kobe earthquake was a whopper at 6.9 on the scale, so many hundreds of times that felt in Scotland and devastating for the locals. If you experienced the earthquake this month you can fill in the survey here. https://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/questionnaire/EqQuestIntro.html
