SS Explorer and Father's Day Ideas
If you are visiting Edinburgh and the dock area you’ll most likely know about the Royal Yacht Britannia, which was featured on the TV series The Crown, which was last year voted as Best UK attraction. But the historic dockyard area has other ships to take a gander including the SS Explorer which has been previously been hidden from public view. This is a historic ship that is a wondrous kind of time capsule of life in a bye gone age. The ship was originally a Scottish marine research ship, built in 1955 and it remains mostly untouched by the passage of time. The ship was decommissioned in 1985 and an SS Explorer Preservation Society has struggled to get the ship ready to wow the public with a fully restored ship. At the moment you have to email them to get a look at the old days at sea, but it looks to be well worth while. The crew and officers lived very different lives back in the day, unlike the more egalitarian seagoing life now.
The SS Explorer was something of a pioneer in the field of climate science, it was the first vessel to have a computer on board to crunch data in real time, and helped map the biodiversity at the sea as we came to our modern view of our future on this planet. When there was a move to scrap the vessel in 1986 a group of wildly enthusiastic volunteers acquired the ship and set up a society to make the SS Explorer into an accessible living, floating museum in Leith.
