Paris Climate Talks Will Affect Scottish Flowers
Noted Scottish Beauties Threatened with Extinction in Country
The threat of rising temperatures, which always seem laughable at this time of year have placed some Scottish flowers at great risk in the coming century. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh predicts species such as clematis will be under threat while other species will flourish as the nation warms. The recent past has seen 14 of the warmest 15 years on record in the last 14 years and 2015, unbelievably when you are sitting in your thermals, is set to be the warmest yet.
Capital Hammered by Heat
Edinburgh will be particularly badly hit as the Himalayan Blue Poppy made famous in the city’s emblem, is predicted to go as the country warms. The scientists looked at common Scottish plants from our back gardens and the news is dire for those that most thrive in Scotland’s challenging weather. Soon they predict Scotland will be hotter and drier all year round. Why there is already a vineyard in Fyfe.
Local Varieties May be Doomed
The clematis montana – a plant used by gardeners to hide ugly structures such as sheds and walls will be off, because now while the current Scottish climate is largely dreadful the plant thrives. Warming would make it harder or impossible to grow, leaving the space for nasty foreign imports to grow like Japanese knotweed.
