Retirement Suits Sir Andy
After a marvellous playing career Sir Andy Murray the Great Scot retired just a few weeks ago at the Paris Olympics. He went out on a high with Dan Evans, but missed out on the U S Open which finished on Sunday. But the deuce of a questions is, will retirement drive the tennis ace nuts? And the answer surprisingly is not at all. One nature’s great obsessives Andy’s found a couple of new obsessions, his kids and golf. The nation’s greatest ever athlete won three Gland slams , two Olympic Gold medals and a Silver and now he’s embarked on another lonely sport, just him a club and dimpled ball. Yes that’s golf!
The bionic man, Sir Andy has a resurfaced metal hip, decided that 37 was old enough to pack it all in and he’s aiming at becoming a scratch golfer in his retirement. The pressure to represent the nation and be the very best is no longer there and Andy is offski. In 2013 he won the first Wimbledon by a British man after a 77 year wait. And of course the missus was there to see it happen, except for the bit when my very fair skinned wife fainted for the middle set, reviving only for the triumphant winning set. But Sir Andy has many business and sporting interests and so he won’t be either short of a bob or two, or something to do. He’ll no doubt follow his mum’s example and take up a career in tennis coaching to while away the coming decades.
