Re-Invigorating Aspen and Re-Invigorating Our Offering

Have you seen an aspen? I have. I just have to walk down to the edge of the garden and we have an aspen sleeper wall. But it is American aspen not Scottish aspen. It’s one of the UK’s rarest trees and experts are planning to repopulate the nation with this lovely grey tree. They used to be fairly common and were spread across all the upland parts of the country, but loss of habitat and the general weirdness of the aspen’s lifespan and behaviour have seen it decline. It is a “pioneer” species necessary for biodiversity. When it cannot flower and produce seeds it will grow vegetably and  in North America a whole forest can in a sense be from a single tree.

The way to repopulate the aspen involves tree torture. These odd trees don’t flower very often in the wild and so the native population is just getting older and older. (I know the feeling!) The experts are stressing the trees to make saplings flower and produce seeds .For example when there was a mass flowering in 2019, it followed a very hot and dry spring the previous year. The experts think that’s a stress response. The previous mass flowering was 1996, but the seeds are so light they need to make contact with bare soil immediately to take root. So the intervention of humans seems to be the only way forward.
