Put Some Zip in your Life with James Pirie

If you are familiar with the Clydeside skyline, then you may have seen the Greenock Titan Crane? This monster mover was built in 1917 and now there are exciting proposals using the giant structure as the base for the nation’s longest city zipline, and who doesn’t love a zipline? There was a time when the power of shipbuilding in Glasgow was one of the foundations of wealth and security in Scotland. Indeed national treasure Billy Connelly started life as a builder in the shipyards on the Clyde, before their sad decline in the 70s and 80s.

The crane is a part of an area of A listed buildinsg and it has needed some repair as storms had knocked off some bits and for a while there was doubt about the long term survivability of the structure which was built Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd. They were Glasgow boys who built the second Tay Bridge, the Forth Bridge and Tower Bridge in London. The second bridge we note is still there over a century and half later. You can stil see the stumps of the first below the bridge.

This second structure replaced the original Forth Bridge immortalised by the nation’s worst ever poet William McGonagall in the Tay Bridge Disaster.

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

The zipline will part of a larger redevelopment for the dockland area. Such is the draw of waterside locations  that the attraction is likely to prove very popular with younger consumers: And in doing so it will preserve a large slice of the history of Scotland’s second city.

And here at James Pirie, established 1890,  we do our little  bit to preserve a small bit of the nation’s heritage and while we don’t have any high speed attractions to divert youth, we can put a bit of zip in your life with some great gifts at great prices and massively good service.  Here are some of our best sellers.
