Imposters- Not Here!
It took a turn by a singer song writer at the Edinburgh Fringe to reveal that there had been an impostor Palm Tree at the Royal Botanic Garden in the capital and instead of being a rare endangered species it was “as common as muck” and nothing special at all in the botanic world other than its age and girth. The palm tree in question had arrived in the nation in the 1790s, being loaded onto a ship from Bermuda and then Germany before finally being planted in the gardens in 1820. Since then it had been a major feature the greenhouse.
Because it was from Bermuda everyone assumed it was a tree called Sabal bermudana which is genuinely rare and on the world endangered list. There are plans to redevelop the glasshouse and move those plants that could be saved. But the size of the palm was such that it was it was going to necessary to chop down the plant to redo the space leading to something of a monster hoo-ha and cries of outrage; which is not surprising as humans are greatly invested in trees. Just look at the enormous outpouring and whacking great prison sentence for the cutting down of the Sycamore gap tree at Hadrian’s Wall. So it was a relief of sorts when the tree was actually found to be an impostor and a Mexican Palm which was as common as common could be and of no great scientific interest. Cuttings and samples were taken so the tree could live on, but the story of the giant 60ft specimen is now effectively over after two centuries of awe inspiring splendour standing proud in the gardens greenhouse.
But here at James Pirie we don’t have any impostors only the good stuff since 1890, when the Edinburgh tree had already been growing in the capital for 70 years. But despite our antiquity there is no shortage of new ideas and new lines. Take for example the three cocktail designs we are featuring.
