If you want to make music from nature would you go the Antarctic and ask to be marooned for the day on a volcanic island with just the penguins for company? One Scottish composer did just that with the Royal Navy and the British Antarctic Survey.  The musician is a native of Edinburgh and he wanted to track in audio and on film the changing nature of the cold continent. I am a big fan of the frozen world of the Antarctic and when I was 16 I volunteered for the all year round expedition there, but they told me to come back when I had a skill they wanted, like a butcher! So I never joined the British Antarctic Survey. Which is just as well, as did you know that they ask you to have your appendix removed if it hasn’t been taken out already as the nearest hospital is thousands of miles away in Argentina, and not a great hospital at that? I still have my appendix, so even now I’m ruled out.

The Edinburgh artist was able to commune deeply with nature in this changing southern hemisphere. The wildlife is completely isolated from human interaction, so the composer was inundated with curious penguins, unafraid of him, but fascinated by something new. But the changes that are taking place over the continent are well underway and he reports the sound of running water where there should only be ice and stillness. The musician has a series of performances set for Scotland where he’ll premiere his work in sound and in film. We wish him well in this noble venture.
