Autumn Offers to Warm the Cockles

Welcome to the Autumn, the season of Autumn mists and mellow fruitfulness and of course Tartan! The plaid is in fashion and on the way back again, whether it’s on the catwalk or the red carpet, the second most famous of Scotland’s products is on the march. The Princess of Wales is a proud wearer of the weave, she did go to St Andrews University after all, and as everyone knows James Pirie was founded in St Andrews in 1890!

The French fashion house of Dior was in the nation to showcase its 2025 collection in Perthshire’s Drummond Castle and the plaid was never far from the runway. But it is far from the first time that Tartan has been haute couture. And of course the tartan is the textile for the Autumn with its warm colours and now strong fashion appeal. Some fashion designers have liked the plaid so much that they have registered their own sett.

However, tartan hasn’t always been legal and after the Rising in 1745 the designs were made illegal in the Dress Act of 1746 which meant the clans could no longer wear Highland dress. It was supposed to suppress the local resistance to Hanoverian rule The law was repealed in 1782 and not just Highlanders adopted tartan. Indeed the monarch George IV wore a tartan kilt when he visited Scotland in 1822.

And of course Queen Victoria and Albert were potty about all things Scottish and tartan was firmly established as a royal favourite. Though Prince Albert might have been far less fond of the nation when he died in Balmoral Castle killed by “ Balmoral Drains” according to his death certificate.

But Autumn also means early bird offers and as the air turns chill, the dreich sets in and leaves get their Autumnal hues, it's time to curl up in front of a cosy fire and get ready for the longer nights ahead and to take a browse of some lovely offers from James Pirie.
