Mummies' Day for Scottish Archaeologist
I’ve previously chronicled the Great Scots who have done some much for science and history not just of the nation, but of all humankind. And now archaeologist Piers Litherland who is from Galashiels has uncovered the two tombs of an Egyptian pharaoh which is pretty big news in the world of Egyptology. The Scottish archaeologist announced the find of the century – the first discovery of a rock-cut pharaoh’s tomb in Egypt since Tutankhamun’s way back in 1922.
The first discovery was the necropolis of Thutmose II who lived some 3,500 years ago. But it was beneath a waterfall and was wrecked shortly after his death in death in 1479BC. It had no body or grave goods , but now Mr Litherland is convinced that he has found Thutmose II’s second tomb and that it may well contain the sarcophagus and grave goods of the dead king, just like Tutankhamun’s.
This would be an earth shattering discovery. The second tomb is believed to be beneath a huge rock pile, which will be hugely expensive to remove, but offers a path to giant discoveries. This rock pile was left by the tomb builders to discourage grave robbers and then cemented in place. And it may have been built after the first tomb flooded. The finds will become instantly important to the world of archaeology with a potential new mummy.
