Personalise Your Mother's Day
Next year will be a big one for Glasgow as the rescheduled Commonwealth Games heads for Scotland’s second city. It was originally intended that a larger Games would be held in Victoria Australia, but they got cold feet when the true costs of running the games became apparent. So the Victorians are ponying up nearly £3m of what my mother would call “shut you up money” as they wash their hands of the commitment. But it provides an opportunity for King Charles III send off the Games Baton Relay some 500 days ahead of the Games. His Majesty will launch the King’s Baton from Buckingham Palace and the Games will begin on 23 July 2026. And because it is to be held in Scotland the first relay will be done by Great Scot Sir Chris Hoy, the tragic Olympic multi gold medallist as the relay travels around the world. Trinidad & Tobago will be the first destination for the relay, it’s not going to swimmers though to make the journey!
The new Games will only feature 10 events this time, rather than the 20 in normal circumstances and when Glasgow last hosted the event in 2014, which was hailed as a great success. However, there will still be in excess of 200 Gold medals to be won. The Para sports will run concurrently with the able bodied events. So I know what I will be watching on the telly in 2026, unless I am lucky enough to snaffle a couple of ticket for me and the missus.
