Mother's Day Treats and Telly Star Chimps
Are you old enough to remember those 1970s and 80s chimps that drank tea on the telly to advertise the beverage? Well I’m afraid I am and they were very funny at the time. But now the chimpanzees Ada Lott, real name Choppers, and Mr Shifter, real name Louis, have gone to the great tea party in the sky. They all enjoyed a long and happy retirement but research, published in a scientific journal and carried out in Scotland by the National Museums of Scotland has shown that it wasn’t all fun being a TV chimp. Indeed the telly stars drank too much sweet tea and ate too much cake for their own good.
The skeleton of Choppers was donated by the National Museums and it was treated with the same kind of rigour normally set aside for Kings found in Leicester car parks and not chimps. The study showed that the fruit and fruit drinks given to the beasties were inappropriate to their needs and when they retired their diet improved and they lived to pretty ripe old ages. Choppers, a female, had lost her mother to poachers, but she was saved for sale as a pet. It would not happen now, but back in those days the exotic pet trade boomed. Indeed one man bought a lion from Harrods in London. Chopper’s early experiences caused her to have a stiff walk, so she always played old ladies in the ads. She worked for 7 years and retired and had 40 years out of the limelight. That’s a pretty good ratio.
So thanks to the researchers in Scotland we know now a great deal about the life of a TV chimp and how well your tax pound is used. But if you want to put your money to the best use for Mother’s Day then look no further than the web pages of James Pirie, established 1890, though I must admit the website popped along quite a few years later.
