A Famous Scottish Mum Returns in Time for Mother's Day

It’s time to become a mum again for one of Scotland’s most famous birds, an osprey that has returned to its Highlands home after over wintering in sunny Africa. But she’s back and on time to Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve, near Dunkeld which is run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

She’s known to the scientists and bird experts as NC0, but I have my own nickname for her, Jessie, after a friend’s mum who was very nice to me when I was growing up. The osprey has now returned for a 6th time to Dunkeld , but she’s a widow and will have to find a new mate.

Her last partner LM12 died last year, but between them they had raised seven chicks. And if you’ve ever watched any of the closed circuit TV or live webcam as they call it in the nests you will know what a fraught business it is raising raptors. They don’t generally tolerate any other chicks in the same nest without a great deal of bullying. A few years ago the CCTV was really X rated as one larger chick pecked and harried a smaller one, but surprisingly they both survived and fledged.

NC0, AKA Jessie, will be a popular bird as there were a couple of males showing an interest last year, so  the chances of breeding look to be okay.  She’s already back in the nest and the live webcam is there for all to watch as the mother to be, we hope, gets the nest ready for the chicks.

All she needs now is a fellah! And we can watch it all! Which is a bit of a turnaround for this magnificent bird, because they were forced into extinction some fifty years ago, But the Highlands in the summer are a grand place for raptors, so they naturally returned.
