May the Flock Be with You: Pablo the Lamb is Rescued
I was looking after a friend who had a knee replacement operation in March and was involved in a low speed lamb chase myself. She has a field that she lends to a local shepherd and he fattens his lambs on it, but they can be extremely frisky and troublesome. Out in the garden I heard, “Get Adam!” The last two remaining sheep had escaped the field and were in the garden munching prize plants. So I sprang into action, despite knowing nothing about sheep and cornered them until the shepherd and his girlfriend came. Max the house dog was no use as he was terrified of sheep, after being put in a pen with a ram when he was a nipper. So there’s me, Adam and sheep. We caught one of the blighters, leaving him to the girlfriend, but the last sheep leaped over the fence again and went haring round the five acre field in the picture. It was then that I learned about the devil may care attitude of sheep. We couldn’t catch it so we had to fetch the sheep dog to cow it and force it into a corner. Little so and so’s they are, but they are nature’s creatures and get respect for that.
So when I heard about another lamb rescue my attention peaked, but this time it was a two week old lamb. Police had stopped a drunken drug dealer’s car on a motorway and one of the passengers looked a little sheepish. Baaa! It was a Welsh mountain lamb keeping a bag of chips company. The lamb was stolen and the chips were cold. Police Scotland officers uncovered £7,000 worth of cocaine and £3,000 of heroin stashed in the vehicle. The lamb could be identified by its ear tag, but the poor thing was nearly at death’s door. The officers took the beast to a local farmer who popped the lamb into a heat box, gave it a vitamin shot and some warm milk. Luckily the lamb soon revived.
The owner of the lamb, who farms near Motherwell, was shocked when the cops phoned up with the news of the lamb, because she hadn’t even realised it was missing, as he was one of 200 new babies. It gets busy at lambing time. He was a premature twin, but unfortunately he had been away too long to be returned to its mother. The creature has now been named Pablo, after the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and he will live a long and happy life as he is being hand-reared before rejoining the flock. Pablo will be the sheep equivalent of a Chippendale dancer, and get the ewes in the mood, but he’ll have his equipment removed so there’ll be no Pablo babies. But you can guess he’ll be very popular.
