March Dreams of Warmer Climes

The West Indies in the winter, it sounds like a dream and believe me I have dreamed about it, as has the missus. In fact she goes further and regularly says that before she met me she could go every year for a break to St Lucia and play tennis in the sun in the winter, just as she always did. I always reply, there’s nothing to stop you dearest, but it gets a scowl. But one lucky female has made it to the West Indies this year, though it is not to St Lucia and Le Sport holidays. It’s to the even posher Barbados. However, it’s not a person that I know though, it’s a female osprey which has completed the remarkable transatlantic journey from Scotland to Barbados.  The raptor was not one of the ones I watched on the OspreyCam through the summer though,  it was tagged last summer in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park in Renfrewshire.

The bird of prey was spotted on the Caribbean island this month. The tag tells us it had covered 4,124 miles in its flight from Lochwinnoch. Ospreys are noted for their odd migratory choices and in 2022 Glen, a juvenile on his first migration, decided to stop his journey to the Canary Isles or Ghana and hitched ride on two oceangoing ships and stopped his sojourn in Spain! Ospreys were nearly extinct in the British Isles until the RSPB got a breeding pair to flourish in the 1950s at Loch Garten in the Highlands. Now they are re-establishing themselves across the nations and thriving in Scotland.

If British wildlife is your bag then take a gander at our British Wildlife engraved glassware, it’s mighty good. The Stag engraved Kintyre Tot Glass is part of a playful collection, expertly engraved on hand cut crystal tots and tumblers. The majestic stag’s head is a beauty! It’s also on half price offer just now. It’s just right for a dram and a toast to that far flying Osprey. Ah, the West Indies in March!
