Life’s Gone Bananas  - But Not Here at James Pirie

Come Mister Tallyman, tally me bananas

Daylight comes and me want to go home

Come Mister Tallyman, tally me banana

Daylight comes and me want go home    (Jamaican Folk Song)

This particular story has happened a long way away from the nation, but it’s a fun one so I couldn’t resist it and the cruise ship in question, Iona, has a Scottish name. Bananas in the bay! Yes it’s true a load of bananas have fallen into the sea off the Isle of Wight and shipping has been forced to stay in harbour and new ships can’t come in.  The ship locked in port is a biggie, and can carry 5,200 passengers but until the i8 containers of fruit can be located on the sea bed this seagoing monster has to remain stuck at the quayside and can’t continue on its a 14-day trip to Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. The cargo was shed in the sea by the boat in bad weather near the Nab tower lighthouse off Bembridge. The Maritime Agency said that the cargo was non-toxic, which comes as a surprise to no one.

But Scotland has seen some harbour problems itself. At Burntisland Harbour locals have complained of the owners blocking access to port areas, Cove harbour has had boulders placed at the pier in another dispute and at Leith in October this year a ferry was blocked in by a Chinese heavy lifting ship vessel. That particular diplomatic and shipping problem had be resolved at the highest level, so nobody went bananas.
