Keep the Home Fires Burning?

When I read the headline “Scotland Bans Wood Burning Stoves,” my heart sank as we coast dwellers with not so many neighbours are very much in love with our German made log burner. We aren’t off grid, but it’s only by the skin of our teeth. Now rural communities, islanders and those who are actually off grid are worried that the new ban on wood burners in new and renovated houses will adversely affect their resilience, as it is put these modern days.  Our log burner is our heating back up, and it seems to get some people’s backs up too.

The new rules at the moment have no impact on properties that already have a log burner, but we feel it is a matter of time before they come for us too. Now it also means that your new house won’t have the gas either. From 1 April, all new homes built in Scotland  are not allowed to use direct emission heating systems such as oil and gas boilers, and bio-energy which includes wood and log burning stoves. Instead we will have to cough up for "climate-friendly alternatives" such as heat pumps or join a  heat networks. Which will be a dear do, as for air source heat pumps in Scotland the cost is around £10,000 for a three-bedroom house, to buy and install. If you have more rooms it will be more since they require heat pumps with a larger wattage to meet the house’s heating needs. The rules will also apply to those looking to convert an existing property. This hasn’t at all gone down well in many rural communities.
