Edinburgh Hits New Heights –
Royal Military Tattoo Ends on High Note
This year the 66th Royal Tattoo will see the lovely, but fearsome peaks of Everest and the dry sandy deserts of Saudi Arabia transported to the Edinburgh tattoo amphitheatre for the event. 2016 is the centenary of the Great Arab revolt, led by T. E. Lawrence and the feisty Gertrude Bell. You might remember Lawrence as played by Peter O’Toole in David Lean’s sun soaked epic in the 60s. Well the Jordanians have a treat to show all.
Centenaries Abound
The British backed the uprising against the Ottoman Empire and its German and Austro-Hungarian allies after the disastrous Dardanelles Campaign the previous year and the aim was to divert resources away from the western battlefields and secure Suez. The events will be commemorated by the Jordanian Royal Guard, a Band and a Drill Team will perform. The peaks of Everest will be honoured by the Nepal Army Band in a show that will feature a recreation of the snow-covered Mount Everest. A £250,000 projection and light show from the team behind the 2012 Olympic Games will also light up the opening ceremony. This year the Tattoo will accommodate 220,000 spectators, more than a 1,000 performers, with 250 pipers and drummers, plus five British military bands.
Don’t Forget Queen’s 90th with Star Wars on Bikes
It’s all special for the Queen's 90th birthday and among the other centenaries is the anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, the major sea battle of World War One. And if you are feeling this is all a bit samey, and by jings you are hard to please, then contemplate the Star Wars motorcycle display team. Darth Vader, not half I’d say.
