Capital Drivers Face Speed Restrictions and Hefty Fines –

And Don’t Forget the Three Points on Your Licence

There are more than half a million motorists sweating on 9 points on their licence, many of whom need their car for their job or their family. Now in Edinburgh there is a new threat to that licence. The 20mph Traffic Regulation Order has come into force and a new ultra low speed limit applies. On the first day of implementation no speeding tickets were issued, but it is very early days.  The idea is intended to make roads safer. Eventually it will cover 80% of the city’s roads in a rolling programme phased over the next two years.

Points and Fines a Go Go

If you are caught doing over the speed limit, hopefully you’ll still get the 10% over before a fine is issued, but that will only be 23 miles an hour; after which those caught flouting the new rules face a hefty £100 fine and three penalty points with the consequent rise in insurance premiums. So if in Edinburgh look out for the large new signs, particularly if you are just visiting the capital and not a resident, otherwise it could be an expensive and frustrating experience. The first phase of the £2m plus scheme is from Queen Street to the Meadows. Local bus operator Lothian Buses has warned the 20mph speed limit across the Capital could lead to higher fares and poorer services. Sends shivers down my spine.
